Internet in Greece: eSIM, roaming and island hopping
A few days in Athens, then an island and perhaps another ferry: internet planning for Greece should follow the whole itinerary. Tickets, accommodation messages and directions to the port are easier to manage when prepared. Before buying a new package, check what your current line already includes.
Your existing plan may be enough
Eligible EU/EEA plans offer roaming in Greece subject to fair-use conditions. Confirm allowances and exceptions with your carrier and the EU roaming guidance.
A plan from Turkey or another country does not necessarily offer the same terms. Compare the included data and full trip duration, not only a daily roaming price. If your existing allowance covers your needs, a separate data eSIM may be unnecessary.
Include the islands in your decision
Athens, Crete and a smaller island do not necessarily have identical connection conditions. List your destinations and review the selected product’s coverage. Ask the accommodation about in-room internet and how to contact them when you arrive.
For multiple island stays, validity also matters. An overnight ferry or the journey home can extend the number of days you need. Check the event that starts the package so preparing it does not unexpectedly use up travel days.
Make ferry-day documents available offline
Save your ticket, port name and accommodation address in advance. Distinguish the departure port from the arrival port and check the exact berth information in your booking. Keeping these items together avoids searching through messages at the terminal.
Do not expect uninterrupted reception at sea. Satellite connections on ships may carry separate charges; check your carrier’s maritime terms.
Budget around your habits
Consider video uploads, cloud backups and calls alongside maps and messages. Decide which tasks can wait for accommodation Wi-Fi. If you will share internet with another traveller, review the package’s hotspot conditions rather than assuming sharing is included.
Check your device before buying, then save the instructions. At arrival, choose the intended mobile-data line. If the trip also includes Turkey, both countries must be explicitly covered by the selected package.

Frequently asked questions
Do I always need a new eSIM for Greece?
No. Your existing plan may already provide enough data in Greece. Check its allowance and conditions first.
Will an eSIM provide continuous service on a ferry?
Do not rely on uninterrupted reception at sea. Save tickets and addresses beforehand and check the charging rules for ship connections.
